The therapeutic massage program is accredited by the Integrative Massage and Somatic Therapies Accreditation Council (IMSTAC), a division of Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals, located at 1271 Sugarbush Drive, Evergreen, CO 80439. ABMP's phone number is 800-458-2267. It is also approved by the Iowa Department of Public Health's Iowa State Massage Board.

Therapeutic Massage – Diploma or Associate of Applied Science

The therapeutic massage industry is a rapidly growing profession. Taking into consideration the mind, body, and spirit the focus of the massage therapist is to meet the needs of the client by perceiving the body as a whole.

With over 50 different therapeutic approaches, the massage therapist is not limited to utilizing only one approach. Massage therapists may work with premature babies, infants, children with disabilities, adults and geriatric clients. This program is designed to be the foundation of any massage therapist's career.

Massage therapists are found in a variety of settings. They may be found under the supervision of a health care facility such as a:

  • Hospital
  • Nursing home
  • Rehabilitation center
  • Chiropractic office

Other massage establishments may include fitness centers, day spas, cruise lines, nutrition centers or hair salons, and may be employed by the establishment or on an independent contract. Many therapists choose to be self-employed and open a private practice independently or with several associates.

Administrative duties may include:

  • Client scheduling
  • Receptionist duties
  • Client record management
  • Office correspondence
  • Medical insurance procedures
  • Fees and collections

Clinical duties may include interviewing the client, documenting client progress reports, administering massage techniques for the purpose of relaxation, revitalization or rehabilitation, or conducting on-site corporate massage.

The therapeutic massage program prepares students to sit for the National Certification for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork exam by ensuring that they meet the standards for certification and have mastered entry-level tasks as defined by the Commission on Training Accreditation (COMTA). NAU offers both a 1-year diploma and the 2-year Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree.

Why Massage Therapy?

According to the U.S. Dept. of Labor, the massage industry is ranked 20th out of the top 50 fastest growing occupations in the United States. The national average percent change is 13% for the 2004 - 2014 employment projection series. Massage therapy is growing faster than the national average at 24%.

Consumers now spend between $4 and $6 billion annually on visits to massage therapists. Doctors are increasingly turning to massage as an alternative to regular health practices such as prescription medications. Therefore, health insurers such as Kaiser Permanente, American Western Life, Group Health Cooperative and Oxford Health Plans are expanding coverage to include these alternative practices.

Diploma in Massage Therapy

The program can be completed in only 7 months with day or evening classes. The schedule is Monday-Friday 9:00AM - 1:30PM or 5:00 - 9:30PM. New classes form monthly!

The massage therapy program is designed to give students a solid foundation in the theory and application of Swedish and deep tissue massage. This includes courses in:

  • Clinical anatomy and bodywork
  • Massage techniques
  • Complementary therapies
  • Clinical practice
  • Business professionalism and ethics

This program provides the student the knowledge and skills required to become a nationally certified massage therapist.

Certification or registration is required to practice massage in the State of Maryland. All graduates must pass the appropriate certifications and exams before practicing massage therapy. The school provides information, assistance and guidance to students in preparation for the exams.

CPR certification is also a requirement for graduation / completion of the massage therapy program. CPR / first aid training and certification is conducted in the classroom. No additional charge to students.
